Patrick Brown

Impossible Foods
Founder and CEO

While on sabbatical, Stanford biochemistry professor Patrick Brown asked himself how he could use his expertise to make the biggest difference in the world. His answer was to create delicious, affordable meat and dairy substitutes from plants, to reduce the environmental harm from animal farming; in 2011 he devoted himself full-time to Impossible Foods. Brown had already had an illustrious career in medical research. He discovered the mechanism by which HIV and other retroviruses operate. He helped develop DNA microarrays and pioneered the use of gene expression patterns to classify cancers and improve prediction of their clinical course. As a cofounder of the nonprofit Public Library of Science (PLOS), he was also a leader in creating a culture of open access in science. Brown is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine and a recipient of the American Cancer Society Medal of Honor. He is also a cofounder of Lyrical Foods, maker of Kite Hill nut-milk cheeses and yogurts.
