The 21st Century: The Century of Biology on Earth and Beyond
Jill Tarter is an astronomer best known for her pioneering work in the search for other life in the universe. In 1984 she helped found the SETI Institute, where she served as director of research until 2012; she currently holds the Bernard M. Oliver Chair at SETI. She led Project Phoenix, a decade-long survey of some 750 nearby star systems using radio telescopes worldwide. Before that, she was project scientist for NASA’s High Resolution Microwave Survey. Tarter is active in developing science curricula for children and is a fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science. She has received numerous honors, including two public service medals from NASA and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Women in Aerospace. In 2004, Time included her on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She was the inspiration for Jodie Foster’s character in the 1997 movie Contact.
