Jaron Lanier is a pioneer of virtual reality and a leading writer on technology and its discontents. He started out as a game developer and left Atari in 1984 to found VPL Research, which made the first commercial VR gear and created the first multiperson virtual worlds, surgical simulations, virtual TV production sets, and other innovations. He’s worked with scientists in a range of fields on advanced computing technologies and consulted on Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi film Minority Report. A founding contributing editor of Wired, Lanier is the author of several best sellers, including Who Owns the Future, named the most important book of 2013 in The New York Times, You Are Not a Gadget, The Dawn of the New Everything, and Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts. He is also a musician who has performed with artists like Philip Glass, Ornette Coleman, Sean Lennon, and George Clinton.
